The Rescue of "Chili" aka Chili-man!

This tale is full of great photos and a couple of videos, so keep scrolling!

Life on the street:

Chili was a dog who ran with the horses from a tourism company on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, BCS, Mexico. He was thin and tired, walking the hot sand every day. He had an owner but was not cared for and was lacking love. You could see the loneliness in his eyes.

They'd named him Caliman, after a Mexican superhero, and a superhero ho was! But that name was interpreted as Chili-man, so that's how I renamed him!

The Rescue: I had seen Chili several times on the beach. I thought he was “ok” and he had an owner and a job. However he seemed to have a subtle sadness about him. The last time I’d seen him on the beach, I wished I had asked his owner to surrender him to me, but I did not. However, a tourist, at that time, told the president of the LCHS that this dog was in need, and the owner was willing to surrender him! So my friend Aida went to pick him up at a remote resort location. She was in high heeled shoes, in the back of a pickup truck in the sand, working to rescue this dog! It was quite an adventure for all!

When I heard of this rescue, I went to visit Chili at the animal center immediately. I cooked meals for him at my house and took them to the shelter daily, to help him gain weight, which he did! He went through chemo treatments for TVT. But he's a survivor!

The Happy Life: At the time, the LCHS partnered with several US and Canadian animal rescue organizations. A volunteer at one of these groups, wished to foster Chili. I escorted Chili via Alaska Air, to Canada to meet Janine.

I was also escorting 4 other dogs and they postponed our connecting flight, so we had to spend a night in Seattle, and the only pet-friendly hotel nearby was the Double Tree! We only had 4 hours before we had to return to the hotel, but Chili and the other dogs lived it up in Luxury!

Our arrival in Calgary Canada! Brrrr! But Chili had a doggie-coat to wear home!

We arrived in Calgary and met up with the rescue team at the airport. Janine quickly became a “failed foster” and adopted him! Chili now had not only a family, but a horse as well!

Chili had a new "brother" now as well! Sid and Chili love to play!

He lived a long healthy life in Canada and even flew back to Los Cabos for a vacation. The photos and video below are from some of my time with him when he came back to Cabo to visit.

What a happy dog he became, and when his horse got sick, he went to his side and stayed with him. He was a true horse-loving dog who warmed so many hearts, especially mine.
